Nine people drown every day in the United States, this equals 3,285 senseless deaths a year. Swimming pools are the most common for drowning deaths of young children, age 1 to 4 years old. There are many layers of protection against drowning that can be utilized by the most effective is “swimming lessons”. In 2007, the 5 major national learn-to-swim groups, along with 11 other “interested organizations”, came together to sign USA Swimming’s Make a Splash Proclamation. They all agreed and believed in the following statement:
“All of the organizations stand firmly committed to increasing the importance of water safety awareness which includes learning to swim as one of the important layers of protection.”
In 2008, these same learn to swim organizations continue to work to make their curriculums practical, deliverable, and effective. It will depend on the specific needs of your clients/customers in deciding what group they choose to teach their children how to swim and to be safe in and around the water.
